Embrace the Unknown Journey

Continuing from last week and our look at the story of Rebekah on her way to meet Isaac, son of Abraham. We see in verse 58 from chapter 24 in Genesis, Rebekah being asked by her mother and brother whether she would leave at that moment or delay her departure for ten days:- ‘And they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.” She did not want to delay. She wanted to get on with the journey of over 500 miles and more to go and meet this man Isaac! It was an unknown journey for her, seated on a camel and all the things that were ahead.

Would she have worried at all? After weeks of travel and all kinds of terrain, would she have afforded a moment of doubt or perhaps despair? The servant, whom was sent out by Abraham to find a bride for his son was in charge of the journey. It was his responsibility to ensure the safe delivery of Rebekah to Isaac. Rebekah had submitted and trusted the servant on the unknown journey.

The Holy Spirit is our guide and helper on our unknown journey to Jesus. It is the Spirit that the is willing when our body is weak (Matthew 26:41), it is through the Holy Spirit that we are learning to put to death the sinful deeds and come through to eternal life (Romans 8:13), it is the Spirit that we engage in our battles and learn to take our thoughts in captivity to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) and it is through the Holy Spirit that we display the fruits of the Spirit, which are ‘love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23, AMP)

It is an unknown journey we are on. But we are in safe hands. The Holy Spirit will take us safe to the hands of the Master.

As a camel travels through the desert, it is through a landscape that is full of scorpions and snakes – just like the world! But, though the ride maybe uncomfortable, you are safe and you do get a pretty good view!
