In Genesis chapter 1, we read of creation. From verse 3, it says: – And God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. It is then we read from verse 14 God creating two lights, that being the sun and moon to ‘rule over the day and the night.’ Therefore, what was the ‘light’ that God called good in verse 3 that was distinguished from the darkness? It was God Himself! It was the presence of the Holy Trinity that brought ‘light’ to a desolate dark place!
The prophets also prophesied the coming of a ‘further light’ to illuminate the darkness of man’s hearts. In Isaiah 60 verses 1-2, it says: – Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you.” Wow – what truth! The life and truth of Christ has shone upon us and continues to live in us! Jesus says in John chapter 8 verse 12:-“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” The world and our sin put Christ to death on the cross. But His life through the Holy Spirit dwells with us. Therefore, His light now lives in us!
How are we living? Are we aware of the ‘light’ in us that is to shine in the darkness? The hope of the world that is Jesus, being within us to bring healing and salvation to man’s hearts? We need to ‘trim our lamps’, turn the dial from ‘dim’ and set them to full and bright. Jesus says something very profound in John chapter 9 verses 4 and 5:- “We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” The Church, the bride of Christ carries the message now of Christ to the World. There is a time coming when Jesus will ‘snatch away’ those who belong to Him like a thief in the ‘night!’ Then, the night remains as the Holy Spirit that gave light through the bride has been taken.
In reading the conclusion of the Bible, we see in Revelation the summarising of how things were at the beginning of Genesis. We read in Revelation chapter 22 verse:- And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign for ever and ever.
He is the ‘LIGHT.’
