In the book of Luke, chapter 24, we read the story of two disciples of Jesus walking away from Jerusalem on the road to Emmaus. In this fascinating and absorbing encounter, we see the nature of Jesus and how He interacts with the disciples, and we also see the hearts of the disciples and their understanding of all the things that have happened.
This encounter plays out so wonderfully. Jesus acting as a stranger to the disciples, manages to coax out of them their view of all things! Jesus does rebuke them for their lack of understanding of the Old Testament scriptures and gives them a full Bible study outlining the promise of His coming! Later, the disciples convinced a ‘hidden’ Jesus back to where they were staying and shortly after, Jesus broke bread and revealed himself to them! They exclaimed most famously in verse 32 of chapter 24, “They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” “Were not our hearts burning?” Wow! Do our hearts burn as we read the Word of God – allowing Jesus to minister to us through His Word and Holy Spirit?
It is time Church! Jesus, by His Spirit is coming alongside us all as we continue, but we need to be walking with Him to where He wants us. Not walking away from where He wants, us like the two disciples in this account. Let us strongly desire Jesus to be with us, to guide us and allow His Word to burn within us. When He walks with us, there should be a flame within us as we walk out our destiny on this side of eternity!
