Life is certainly a journey. A journey that can be unpredictable, with both joy and sadness woven into the fabric of our lives. In the Old Testament, we see a story of a woman called Rebekah. In Genesis 24 we see her living out a daily routine and then out of the blue, a visitor brings news. News that will take her life immediately on a path that she could not have imagined. She is on a journey to her destiny – to be married to Isaac, son of Abraham.
The story here is a picture of God – as the Father, sending out His servant – the Holy Spirit, to find a Bride – the Church(!) for His Son – Jesus! Wow! And with Rebekah, we see a woman, who is prepared to leave all that she knows to follow the servant on a journey to marry the son of Abraham – Isaac!
When there is a knock on the door of our heart from Jesus and we let Him in, our journey takes us on a path that we too never expected. We see in Rebekah that there was no hesitation in following the servant. The servant was convincing enough to persuade Rebekah to leave all behind to follow him on a 500 mile plus journey on a camel to a new life! What convinces us to leave our old life to follow Jesus? In John 15 verse 26, Jesus says – “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.” The Spirit will bear witness about me! The Holy Spirit touches us and convinces us to follow Jesus! And with that conviction we do not waste a moment in turning to follow Him. Or do we?
Rebekah, before following the servant, was asked whether she wanted to delay her leaving for ten days, but the servant was adamant that there was no time to waste! Her mother and brother asked Rebekah in Genesis chapter 24 and verse 57, “Let us call the young woman and ask her.” 58 And they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.” Rebekah was prepared to go immediately to respond to the call! As Christians and upon giving our lives to Christ, we should be prepared to go. And so follows our journey to our destiny with Jesus!
Rebekah was totally now in the hands of the servant. Sat on a camel for 500 to 700 miles, she was now under the guidance of the servant. We too are not alone; we have the Holy Spirit to guide us! In John 16 verse 33, Jesus says – “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” Staying in close communion with the Holy Spirit, in prayer and fasting, we too can be guided on the journey to our destiny. The Holy Spirit is the servant of both the Father and Son, in bringing a ‘Bride’ to the wedding! Let us stay on the Camel and be guided on the journey!!
