The most popular theme that reoccurs time and time again in the New Testament is one that should make us stand up and be watchful. It is ‘deception.’
The New Testament writers echo the warnings given by Jesus in the Gospels and the Apostle Paul gives this warning to the Church in Corinth. Paul begins chapter 11 with a cry from his heart saying how he has presented this church to Christ, as a pure bride to her husband. Then we sense some anguish in the tone of his words when he gives them this warning from verse 3 – “But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” Paul continues to add that they will be led astray by hearing a different ‘Jesus’ the receiving of a different spirit and the hearing of a different gospel.
To know Jesus intimately and the desire for Him is of the utmost importance. Because when we hear teachings and hear ‘supposed’ prophecies we will be able to discern through the correct Spirit what is false! We will not be deceived as we know Jesus and that is not His nature and purpose for His people.
In these days, we must spend more time in His presence, praying and reading the Words of Jesus! This is an absolute priority. If not, we can be open to be deceived by others and their teachings. Paul continues to warn us about this in 2 Timothy 4: 3-5, “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry.
Keep putting Jesus first in all you do. If you love Him, you will. Hold onto the love letter He has left for you as you navigate your journey with Him. He has sent His Holy Spirit the Comforter with you too, so as you read His Word you will know His presence, love and joy.
